Ice Climbing Camp

Overview

Join Rippleffect for a week of ice climbing instruction, fun, and new challenges! Ice climbing provides the unique opportunity to experience the alpine environment in a fresh and exciting way. New England is home to dozens of world-class ice climbs that participants will get to explore throughout the week while learning the basics of the sport. Skills that will be covered include crampon use, using ice axes, proper climbing technique, belaying, anchor building, site selection, and more! Participants of Rippleffect’s Ice Climbing Camp will gain the skills and confidence to take themselves to new heights!

If the weather proves unfavorable for ideal ice climbing conditions, participants will be given the opportunity to explore alternative winter alpine initiatives throughout the week including climbing mountains in the White Mountains of New Hampshire!

Rippleffect’s Ice Climbing Camp is a day camp experience.

Program Requirements:

  • The desire and ability to be outside in winter weather for at least 8 hours 

  • Ability and desire to walk on varied, snowy and at times steep and icy terrain for 5+ miles a day with a 25-35LB pack 

  • Desire to challenge oneself  

  • Desire to LEARN TECHNICAL ICE CLIMBING SKILLS including: rope safety systems, crampon technique, ice axe use for climbing, technical ice climbing technique and safe equipment use. 

  • Willingness to endure cold temperatures and follow guide instructions 

  • A flexible, growth mindset 

Ages: 9th-12th Grades

Program Dates: Tuesday, Feb. 20th – Friday, Feb. 23rd

Location:

  • Each day will begin at our office located at 159 State St, Portland, Maine

  • Field experiences will take place in a variety locations including surrounding mountains and woods in the Southern Maine area, as well as the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Transportation to all field experiences will be provided by Rippleffect.

Time: Pick-Up and Drop-Off times will be communicated as the program becomes closer and we have a clearer picture of which ice climbing venues will be accessible. Our introductory days will likely be from 8:30am-4:30pm, while our later field experiences that are further afield may be from 6am-6pm.

Tuition : $650

  • Limited scholarship funding is available! Please submit a scholarship application, located here, within 48 hours of submitting your child's enrollment request.

Equipment: Rippleffect can provide all essential winter travel equipment (boots, layers, backpack, snowshoes, climbing equipment, etc.)
